How We Use AI

The short version: ProPlan Scholar uses generative AI from Anthropic (Claude) to power features like syllabus parsing, flashcards, and study guides. Your uploaded materials are sent to Anthropic in real time when those features run, and are not used to train AI models. We do not share your data with any AI provider beyond what's required to generate the output you requested.

1. Which features use AI

The following features rely on a generative AI provider (Anthropic Claude). Every other feature in the app — calendar, scheduling, grade tracking, focus timer, study streaks, push notifications, etc. — runs entirely on our own systems with no AI involvement.

Syllabus import	Reads your syllabus PDF or text and extracts course name, professor, assignments, and due dates.
AI flashcard generation	Generates question/answer cards from an assignment's title, notes, and any attached materials.
AI study guide generation	Generates topic outlines, Q&A practice, summaries, or cheat sheets from assignment- and course-level materials.
Study assistant chat	Answers your study-related questions in conversation form.
Image OCR	Reads photos of worksheets, handouts, or notes you upload, and uses the extracted content for flashcards or guides.
URL fetching	When you paste a public URL (e.g., Google Doc, Dropbox, .pdf link), our server fetches the content and sends it to the AI for the requested operation.

2. What data goes to Anthropic, and what doesn't

Sent to Anthropic when an AI feature runs

The text content of files or URLs you've attached to the relevant assignment or course.
The assignment or course name, due date, and any notes you've typed.
For chat: your message and recent conversation history.
For images: the image bytes (base64-encoded), processed by Anthropic's vision model.

Never sent to Anthropic

Your password or authentication credentials.
Your phone number, email address, or other contact information.
Your grades or GPA history.
Your work schedule, sport schedule, Greek life details, or other lifestyle information.
Other students' data — every AI request is scoped to your own account only.

3. Anthropic's data handling

Anthropic processes API requests under their Commercial Terms. Per those terms, data sent to Anthropic via their API is not used to train AI models. Anthropic retains API request data for a limited window (typically 30 days) for abuse-monitoring purposes, then deletes it. Your data is never used to improve their general models or shared with other Anthropic customers.

4. AI output is not professional advice

Content generated by AI features (study schedules, extracted syllabus data, flashcards, study guides, chat responses) is for academic planning purposes only. It is not a substitute for:

Official course materials, syllabi, or instructor communications. Always verify dates, requirements, and grading information against your professor's official channels.
Legal advice. AI cannot interpret academic integrity policies for your specific institution.
Medical or mental-health advice. If you're experiencing burnout, the AI may suggest healthy habits, but it is not a substitute for professional care.
Accuracy guarantees. AI can hallucinate, misread documents, or generate content that looks plausible but contains errors. Always verify important academic information.

5. Your rights and controls

Opt out by not using AI features. Every AI feature is opt-in via an explicit click (Generate Flashcards, Generate Study Guide, Upload Syllabus, etc.). You can use ProPlan Scholar entirely without invoking AI.
Delete your uploaded materials at any time. Use the trash icon on any file or URL row. Once deleted, the file is removed from our storage and cannot be sent to the AI again.
Delete your account. Email hello@proplanscholar.com and we will delete your account and all associated data within 30 days.
Request a data export. Email us and we will provide a copy of all data we have associated with your account.

6. AI-generated content is labeled in the app

Within the app, content produced by AI is identified as such. Generated study guides display a format badge (Outline / Q&A / Summary / Cheat Sheet) plus an "AI-generated" indicator. Generated flashcards include category metadata and are clearly marked. The toast message after generation states explicitly how many of your uploaded files were used as input.

7. Texas Responsible AI Governance Act (TRAIGA)

ProPlan Scholar is designed to comply with the disclosure and transparency provisions of TRAIGA. We do not use AI for the regulated high-risk decision categories TRAIGA targets (employment, lending, housing, biometric identification, government services, social scoring). Our use of AI is limited to consumer-facing study tools that augment your own academic planning.

9. Changes to this disclosure

We will update this page when we add new AI features, change AI providers, or modify how data flows. Material changes will be announced via the app's release notes and via email to active users. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent change.
